Kollaboration is an organization dedicated to empowering aspiring, talented Asian and Pacific Islander (API) youth by providing resources and opportunity to accomplish their goals as artists while providing quality entertainment for the community.Kollaboration Houston has been one of the top chapters in the nation, and we intend to keep it that way. The flagship of each Kollaboration chapter is an annual showcase of up to ten talented artists competing in a showcase. Houston’s first showcase in 2010 drew an audience of over a thousand people. With three more successful showcases in the years after, it remains an exciting event many come back to year after year. In addition, Kollaboration Houston has up to a dozen other events planned in the year of 2015.
(1) at‐risk API youth by providing them with a creative outlet and leadership training that provides an alternative to gang activity and delinquency,
(2) API families by providing a platform for communication, helping to bridge the gap between first generation parents and second generation youth, and
(3) the API community at large, by creating a sounding board for other critical community issues.
APIs have historically been categorized into certain images in mainstream media, making it difficult for APIs to be hired outside “model minority” or “foreigner” roles. This limits support to pursue non-traditional career paths due to cultural expectations and causing a lack of APIs in mainstream entertainment industry. Thus, APIs not only inaccurately portrayed but also disproportionately under-represented in mainstream media, leaving API youth with few visible role models and a narrowed pool of aspirations. As the largest API talent organization in North America, Kollaboration endeavors to bring about a paradigm shift of perceptions. By setting up a playform for talented API to be discovered by an eager community, Kollaboration works to both bring about change and promote diversity in the communities they serve. In alignment with “Empowerment through Entertainment,” the ultimate goal for the Kollaboration movement is a future of innovative and creative artistry with all races and ethnicities.
